The ₹1 Lakh Health Insurance Hack
- Age is the Multiplier: If you are under 60, your maximum deduction for your own family's premium is ₹25,000. If you also pay for your parents (who are under 60), you get another ₹25,000 (Total ₹50,000).
- The Senior Citizen Bump: If your parents are over 60, their limit jumps to ₹50,000. If you are also over 60, your personal limit jumps to ₹50,000. This brings the maximum possible deduction under 80D to ₹1,00,000.
- The ₹5,000 Preventive Checkup: The government allows a ₹5,000 deduction for preventive health checkups (blood tests, full body scans) paid in cash. However, this is not over and above the 80D limits. It is carved out of the existing ₹25k/₹50k limits. If your insurance premium already consumes your full ₹25,000 limit, you cannot claim the ₹5,000 checkup.
- Payment Mode: To claim the premium deduction, the payment must be made via banking channels (Credit Card, UPI, NetBanking). Cash payments for premiums are strictly disallowed (though cash is allowed for preventive checkups).
