What is a FIRE Number?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FIRE number is the total amount of invested money you need to generate enough passive income to cover all your living expenses without ever having to work again.

The 4% Rule (Rule of 25): The most common rule of thumb in the FIRE community is the 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR). This states that if you invest in a diversified portfolio, you can withdraw 4% of it annually, adjusted for inflation, without running out of money for at least 30 years. To calculate this, you simply multiply your annual expenses by 25.

Types of FIRE

  • Lean FIRE: Having a smaller FIRE number by planning for extreme frugality and minimal expenses in retirement.
  • Fat FIRE: A much larger FIRE number that allows for a luxurious lifestyle without budgeting constraints.
  • Barista FIRE: Having a partial FIRE number where your portfolio covers core expenses, but you work a low-stress part-time job for supplemental income or health benefits.
  • Coast FIRE: Having enough money invested at a young age that it will naturally compound to reach your FIRE number at traditional retirement age without adding another dime.
