- Exclusive to Women: The MSSC was launched in Budget 2023 specifically to encourage financial independence for women. The account can be opened by any woman for herself, or by a guardian on behalf of a minor girl.
- High Interest, Short Tenure: Unlike PPF (15 years) or NSC (5 years), the MSSC offers a very attractive 7.5% interest rate for a short lock-in period of just 2 years. Furthermore, the interest is compounded quarterly, increasing the effective yield.
- Partial Withdrawals: You don't have to wait a full 2 years if an emergency strikes. The scheme allows a one-time partial withdrawal of up to 40% of the eligible balance after the first year.
- No Tax Benefits: It is important to note that deposits made under MSSC do not qualify for Section 80C tax deductions, and the interest earned is fully taxable according to the depositor's income tax slab.
