Understanding 80D Limits
The Income Tax Act defines strict limits for health insurance deductions under Section 80D:
- Non-Senior Citizens (Below 60): The limit is ₹25,000 for self/family, and another ₹25,000 for parents.
- Senior Citizens (60+): The limit increases to ₹50,000. If you are below 60 but your parents are above 60, you can claim ₹25k for yourself and ₹50k for them (Total ₹75,000).
- Preventive Health Checkups: You can claim up to ₹5,000 for health checkups. However, this ₹5k limit is subsumed within the overall ₹25k/₹50k limits. It is not an additional deduction above the limit.
