Understanding Post Tax FD Return: Definition, Example, and Importance
What is Post Tax FD Return?
Post Tax FD Return refers to the effective interest income earned from a Fixed Deposit (FD) after accounting for taxes deducted on the interest earned. In other words, it is the actual return an investor receives once the tax liability on the FD interest is settled.
Unlike the gross interest rate offered by banks (which is the pre-tax return), the post tax return gives a clearer picture of the real earnings from your investment.
Simple Explanation
When you invest in a Fixed Deposit, the bank pays you interest at a certain rate (say 6% per annum). However, this interest income is taxable as per your income tax slab. The tax is usually deducted at source (TDS) by the bank. The amount left after paying this tax is your post tax return.
Example
Suppose you invest ₹1,00,000 in an FD with an interest rate of 6% per annum. The gross interest earned in one year is:
Interest = ₹1,00,000 × 6% = ₹6,000
If your income tax slab is 30%, then tax on the interest is:
Tax = 30% of ₹6,000 = ₹1,800
So, the post tax interest you actually receive is:
Post Tax Interest = ₹6,000 - ₹1,800 = ₹4,200
The post tax FD return rate can be calculated as:
Post Tax FD Return Rate = (₹4,200 / ₹1,00,000) × 100 = 4.2%
This means, although the advertised FD rate is 6%, your actual earnings after tax reduce effectively to 4.2%.
